- Licence liability condition: Yes, and the surprise is which regime it comes from. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and refrigeration, are plumbing work under Schedule 2 Part 3 of the Occupational Licensing Act 2005, and regulation 4(1)(a) of the Plumbing Work Regulations 2021 makes refrigerated air conditioning prescribed plumbing work. Insurance then flows from section 27 of the Act, with type and amount set by a Gazette notice that could not be retrieved, so no figure is quoted here. One carve-out is worth knowing: regulation 5 excludes work undertaken by sheetmetal tradespersons in connection with the manufacture, installation, maintenance or repair of ventilation or air conditioning plant. Ducted ventilation sheetmetal work sits outside the licence while refrigerated air conditioning work sits inside it. - Licence evidence required: Production on request under section 29(5) of the Occupational Licensing Act 2005, rather than a gate at issue or renewal. The Plumbing Work Regulations 2021 contain no insurance provision at all — the words insurance and indemnity appear zero times across the instrument — so unlike electrical work there is no issue or renewal check, and no automatic suspension on lapse. - Licensing body: Tasmania licenses refrigerated air-conditioning work as Mechanical Services Plumbing, a plumbing work licence class under the Occupational Licensing Act 2005, defined as work on equipment and systems for heating and cooling a building. Refrigerant handling is licensed federally. TAS · effective 2018-05-08 Consumer, Building and Occupational Services Tasmania · 2026-08-25
What contracts commonly ask for
Principals and head contractors set their own insurance requirements, and those are frequently higher than a licence condition. The requirement that binds is the higher of the two, and both have to be read from the actual document.
What this cover costs
This site publishes no cost benchmark for this cover. A benchmark needs a real sample of documents, and none is published until the sample is large enough to compute a median honestly. A benchmark from a handful of policies is a guess with a decimal point.
