Tow truck operators: public liability requirements in Northern Territory

Cover for legal liability to third parties for personal injury or property damage arising from business activities.

Verified for Northern Territory

  • Licence liability condition: Not applicable. With the sole instrument repealed there is no occupational licence in the Territory for an insurance condition to attach to. A tow truck still needs compulsory third party cover, but that attaches to registering the vehicle under the motor accidents compensation scheme, not to the operator. • Licence evidence required: Not applicable. No tow truck operator licence exists in the Northern Territory. NT · effective 2026-08-25 Northern Territory Government · 2026-08-25
  • Licensing body: Tow truck operating is not licensed in the Northern Territory, and it is one of the few cases where a scheme was deliberately removed rather than never created. The Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading (Tow Truck Operators Code of Practice) Regulations 1996 were repealed by section 11 of the Statute Law Amendment (Territory Economic Reconstruction) Act 2021, assented 31 August 2021, as part of implementing the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission's recommendations. The phrase tow truck appears zero times in the Motor Vehicles Act 1949, so nothing replaced it. NT · effective 2026-08-25 Northern Territory Government · 2026-08-25

What contracts commonly ask for

Principals and head contractors set their own insurance requirements, and those are frequently higher than a licence condition. The requirement that binds is the higher of the two, and both have to be read from the actual document.

What this cover costs

This site publishes no cost benchmark for this cover. A benchmark needs a real sample of documents, and none is published until the sample is large enough to compute a median honestly. A benchmark from a handful of policies is a guess with a decimal point.
